Welcome to The WOODWIND INSTITUTE where students learn how to play their desired woodwind instrument in a positive, fun, and encouraging environment.
With a Bachelors of Music Degree in Music Education and over 30 years of professional teaching experience, Kellyann has taught over 400 students including siblings and families with up to 4 students taking simultaneously, and many of them studying for up to as many as 9 years before entering college, several majoring in Music. Kellyann has studied with many renown professional flutists, clarinetists, saxophonists and oboists that has allowed her to become proficient at all of these instruments, as well as Guitar, Voice, Recorder and Percussion. She has 42 years of concert, performance and recording experience and has also directed many Flute, Saxophone and Mixed Chamber Ensembles throughout her 30 years of teaching. (Please refer to the Biography Page for full Bio.)
Kellyann's focus is to give students the opportunity to learn in a safe, positive, fun and encouraging environment. Students ages 7-Adult are welcome to sign up for the woodwind instrument of their choice except for Bassoon and teaches many genres of music. Kellyann has formal Classical and Jazz Training. She believes all students can learn if they have the will to learn and puts the time and effort into practice sessions. Students' needs are met whether their need may be on basic skills, technical skills, solo repertoire, Regional/District/All-State or All-New England Audition preparation, college audition preparation, or ensemble and performance experience. She also gives assistance on Band & Smart Music, but these are generally not her main focus of teaching, unless that is the sole reason a student is taking private lessons. Her teaching focuses primarily on the student's understanding of musical concepts, practice methods, advancement, and performance opportunities through the assignment of method books, clapping & counting rhythms, studies/etudes and solo repertoire, as well as fun music that the student requests. In order to attain success and achievement in these areas, the student needs to listen and be open to suggestions made by Kellyann, follow instructions, and practice the recommended time which should be monitored by a parent.
Kellyann has an extremely patient and gentle demeanor, which makes her a successful teacher. Her teaching goal is to teach students to be musically self-sufficient, so that they may in their future be able to pick up any book or sheet music at a store or online and be able to figure out the rhythms and notes correctly on their own, as she will not be with them forever. She places much emphasis on rhythm through assigning clapping/playing rhythm exercises, which are provided in students' method books or as supplemental sheets which are found in the Online Resource Section of this website.
